Install Oracle Linux 6 (OEL6)

This article presents how to install Oracle Linux 6.

I assume you have already downloaded Oracle Linux 6 64 bit(about 3.5 G) from OTN and you know how to use VirtualBox 64 bit(100M) which is also available on OTN. Create virtual machine with default settings for Oracle Linux 64 bit. 1GB ram and 64G for disk is enough to run OEL6 64-bit. Rest of options you can keep default.

1. Boot from dvd or iso file. Select first option and press “enter” key.

2. You have 2 options here “OK” or “Skip”. “OK” will start verification of your installation media. It can take quite a lot of time to verify 3.5G of data especially on DVD. I recommend to select “Skip” option. Just press tab to go to “Skip” and press enter.

3. Click on “Next”

4. Select your language and clink “Next”

5. Select your keyboard and click “Next”

6. select storage option and click “Next”

7. Click “Yes, discard any data”

8. Enter host name and click “Next”. There is interesting option here “Configure Network” to change settings of your network – click “Configure Network”.

9. Select “System eth0” and click “Edit”. Then check “Connect automatically” checkbox. You can change other network settings. it’s up to you. When you are ready click “Apply”, “Close”, “Next”.

9. Select your time zone by selecting some city from your time zone and click “Next”

10. Specify root password and click “Next”

11. Select your option, check “Review and modify partitioning layout” and click “Next”

12. I don’t like default settings proposed by installation so I modify them. To modify settings select LVM Volume Groups-vg_oel6 and click “Edit” so you can see details of this volume group and modify all settings.

13. Accept your booting settings and click “Next”

14. Check “Customize now” and click “Next”. On next pages you can select software to install. I usually select all software for “Base System”, “Desktops”, “Applications”, “Development” and some for “Servers”. I do it to have all ready for Oracle database installation and development on Linux.

15. Boring installation …

16. Click “Reboot”

17. You should see following screen just click “Forward”

18. Another click “Forward”

19. Register software or not. I don’t register because of Linux Freedom :).

20. You can add extra user here or not then click “Forward”. OEL as default creates user oracle and extra two groups dba and oinstall. I always later drop the user and the groups.

21. Change date and time and click “Forward”. I always check “Synchronize data and time over the network”.

22. Just click “Finish”

23. After reboot login to machine as user root. Click “Other …”, not “Smartcard Authentication”

Have a fun 🙂
