This article presents how to install Oracle Linux 5.
I assume you have already downloaded Oracle Linux 5 64 bit(about 3.5 G) from OTN and you know how to use VirtualBox 64 bit(100M) which is also available on OTN. Create virtual machine with default settings for Oracle Linux 64 bit. 1GB ram and 64G for disk is enough to run OEL5 64-bit. Rest of options you can keep default.
1. Boot from dvd or iso file. Select first option and press “enter” key.
2. You have 2 options here “OK” or “Skip”. “OK” will start verification of your installation media. It can take quite a lot of time to verify 3.5G of data especially on DVD. I recommend to select “Skip” option. Just press tab to go to “Skip” and press enter.
3. Click on “Next”
4. Select your language and clink “Next”
5. Select your keyboard and click “Next”
6. Just click “Yes” then “Next”
7. Check checkbox “review and modify partitioning layout” and click “Next”
8. Click “Yes” then “Next”
9.Here you can modify layout of your disk partitions. If you like it click “Next”.
10. Just click “Next”
11. Change your host name and network settings. After it click “Next”.
12. Select your region settings and click “Next”.
13. Enter password for user root and click “Next”.
14. Check “Customize now” and click “Next”. On next pages you can select software to install. I usually select all software for “Base System”, “Desktops”, “Applications”, “Development” and some for “Servers”. I do it to have all ready for Oracle database installation and development on Linux.
15. Installation in progress …
16. Just click “Reboot”
17. You should see following screen just click “Forward”
18. Another click “Forward”
19. Disable Firewall click “Yes” on warning screen and click “Forward”
20 Disable SELinux, clcik “Yes” on warning screen then “Forward”
21. Just click “Forward”
20. Just click on “Network Time Protocol” check checkbox “Enable Network Time Protocol” and click “Forward”.
21. You can create extra user here. OEL as default creates user oracle and 2 groups dba and oinstall. I always drop the user and the groups. Just click “Forward” button then “Continue” button on subsequent screen.
22. You can test music card here 🙂 then click “Forward”
23. Cick “Finish” then “OK” so system will be reboot
24. Login as user “root”
25. Enter password for user root which was specified during installation
26. As extra step I install virtual box guest additions for better control of graphic and mouse in VBox. Just click on virtual box menu “Devices”->”Install Guest Additions”. It will mount required soft so click on “VBoxLinuxAdditions.sh” script to start installation. After installation relogin as user root. No reboot required.
Have a fun 🙂
